  1. Uncle Jono - I wrote this in the online guest book of your obituary in The West Australian. As that won't stay online for very long, I decided to leave the same message here....

Some of my earliest memories are of times with Uncle Jono.

    He loved Footrot Flats.

He showed me how to catch yabbies, and helped me build a balsawood glider.

He and Aunty Dot taught me how to use a knife and fork "properly".

Some of my favourite times with him were when he'd take me out to check on the sheep. I'd sit on the fuel tank of his old Yamaha bike - his dog Boyo would run alongside.

Even though we were likely just putting along, it was so much fun for me (I felt like we were flying).

One of my very fondest memories was on one of these bike outings:

Uncle Jon suddenly stopped the bike and switched it off. "Look at those birds, Zoë", he said. "Can you hear their call? Now, get off and walk over here with me, carefully, quietly".

"Can you see anything on the ground?? Look carefully.... No? Look here... it's a baby plover. See how it's feathers make it blend into the ground?"

Uncle Jono picked the baby plover up so carefully and held it gently so I could have a good look. Then he said "Those birds we heard calling before are its parents. They saw us coming and called out to their baby and told it to lay down and not move".

Uncle Jono then put the baby bird down and said. "They'll come back and get their baby once we've gone".

I'll never forget that Uncle Jono. Or the fact you always used Imperial Leather soap.

In more recent years, you once told me you weren't good with babies. You were very good with me, Uncle Jono - I'm going to miss you for the rest of my life.

Cheerio Uncle Jon. I love you to bits and you had a profound and positive impact on my life. Thank you for everything.

  2. Cousin Jono, Unfortunately we can't be in Albany for your Service as we are away, up in the Northwest for three months. Never the less we will be watching the live broadcast of your service via Starlink from Dales Gorge in the Karijini National Park. We have good memories of visiting your farm at Ongerup in the early days to collect Mallee roots for our fire at home.
    Cheerio Cousin Jono

  3. I will always think of Uncle Jon as a true gentleman. Kind, considerate, thoughtful and respectful are a few words I think would best describe Uncle Jon.

Uncle Jon loved nothing more than a 'solid' conversation. A perfect partner to compliment Auntie Dot in that he would be invested in any discussion taking place. He loved to hear what everyone was up to and often spoke of personal recollections, stories and shared experiences.
Uncle Jon had a sense of humour and his eyes would light up, followed by a chuckle - as he never missed a joke.

He would often talk with my husband about his work away. Uncle Jon was eager to hear of the workplace and with his love of planes, they would discuss the time my husband had spent working on the aircraft in the RAAF, prior to his current employment.

Uncle Jon loved the land and farmed it. He loved the skies and the craft that fly in it. He loved the water and sailed it. He lived to enjoy all of these things - taking an exhilarating glider flight only recently!

I will be forever grateful for the unconditional support Uncle Jon provided for Auntie Dot during their time together and the care, nurturing and I have no doubt, struggles, faced with Auntie Dot during her final months, weeks and days. I am sorry it was not the final adventure Auntie Dot would have liked to share but I hope Uncle Jon was able to look back on the life they did enjoy together and hold onto and treasure those special memories.

With a love of sky, sea and land, I hope Uncle Jon can eternally glide through open blue skies, feel the coolness of ocean salt spray upon his face and send a willing border collie around a mob whenever he feels the whim - joining Auntie Dot in the garden for a cuppa on his return.

I am sorry I will not be in Albany for your service Uncle Jon but I will be watching the live stream in honour of your memory. Thank you for your kindness, patience and caring. I know you and Auntie Dot are now both at peace but I still wish you were not gone.
I will miss you both and feel so blessed to have known you...
    Jo xx

  4. I have known Jon for 20 years through sailing. We had some wonderful Wednesday trips out of the Sailing Club marina to places around King George Sound, sometimes sailing around Michaelmas and Breaksea Islands, sometimes anchoring for lunch off the Breaksea Island Jetty. They were all great trips and enjoyable, memorable events. Jon was always kind and considerate, besides being skipper of his yacht, Wild Goose. I shall remember him as a very positive person. We shall all miss him.
